Rabbi Shimon SchwabSynopsis
Rav Shimon Schwab zt”l was one of the towering Torah figures of the twentieth century — a master orator, deep thinker, eloquent writer, and fearless spokesman for authentic Torah hashkafah. He served as Rav in pre-war (Ichenhausen) Germany, then in Baltimore (Congregation Sherith Israel) and finally in New York, leading K’hal Adath Jeshurun of Washington Heights. Throughout the years he guided the generation with clarity, integrity, and a relentless quest for emes.
This remarkable volume presents many of Rav Schwab’s writings and speeches — deeply insightful essays that explore topics ranging from emunah and tefillah to communal leadership, Torah Im Derech Eretz, Zionism, and the challenges of modernity. These writings include reminiscences from Rav Schwab’s encounters with Torah luminaries such as the Chafetz Chaim, Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski, Rav Elchonon Wasserman, and Rav Yeruchem Levovitz, offering an animated portrait of the prewar Torah world.
Many of the pieces were originally printed in the Mitteilungen, the journal of KAJ, and are presented here with introductions, annotations, and full source references. Also included are newly published transcripts of speeches delivered by Rav Schwab and faithfully transcribed by his Talmidim.
A treasury of Divrei Torah, historical reflection, and uncompromising emes, this collection offers today’s reader a profound encounter with a great rabbinic personality.
