Rabbi Yechiel Michel HaLevi Epstein (1829-1908), Av Beis Din of Novardok, wrote the Aruch HaShulchan as a halachic code that thinks aloud: it traces every ruling from the Gemara through the Rishonim and the Shulchan Aruch down to the practice of his own day. It has been a working tool of rabbanim and dayanim for over a century - and, until now, largely closed to the English reader.
This first volume of Hilchos Issur v'Heter covers Simanim 87-99: the Torah source and scope of the prohibition of basar b'chalav; meat and cheese on one table; waiting between meat and dairy and separating utensils; the kachal (udder); cold contact, tataah gavar and salted foods; meat that fell into milk and the principle of chatichah na'asis neveilah; pots, covers, spoons and knives; nosen ta'am bar nosen ta'am; davar charif cut with a meat, dairy or non-kosher knife; dough kneaded with milk or fat; and the opening laws of ta'aruvos - nullification and the measuring of a prohibition.
