Emanuel Ringelblum

Emanuel Ringelblum was a Polish-Jewish historian, politician, and social worker known for his extensive work in documenting the Holocaust. Born on November 21, 1900, in Buczacz, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Buchach, Ukraine), Ringelblum was deeply involved in Jewish community life and historical documentation. He studied history at the University of Warsaw and became a prominent member of the Jewish Socialist party and a leader in Warsaw's Jewish community. During World War II, he initiated the secret Oneg Shabbat project in the Warsaw Ghetto, which aimed to compile a comprehensive archive of life in the Ghetto. The archive, hidden in milk cans and metal boxes, was mostly recovered after the war and serves as a crucial historical document.
