Philip Birnbaum

Philip Birnbaum was an American author and translator known for his significant contributions to Jewish liturgy. Born in 1904 in Kielce, Poland, he immigrated to the United States in the early 1920s. Birnbaum received his education at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and later at Dropsie College in Philadelphia, where he earned a degree in Hebrew letters. His works, particularly his translations and commentaries on Jewish prayer books and the Hebrew Bible, have been widely used in synagogues and homes across the English-speaking world. Birnbaum's approach to translation was meticulous and aimed at making the liturgical texts accessible while preserving their original meaning and spiritual depth.
