Shmuel Safrai
Shmuel Safrai (1919-2003) was a distinguished professor of Jewish History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His academic work primarily focused on the history and literature of the Talmudic period. Born in Poland, Safrai moved to what was then British Mandate Palestine in 1939, where he later became a founding member of the Department of the History of the Jewish People at the Hebrew University. His research contributed significantly to the understanding of the social, cultural, and religious contexts of the Talmud and the New Testament. Safrai's approach combined rigorous historical methods with a deep understanding of rabbinic texts, making his work pivotal for scholars of Jewish history and religious studies.
