Hyam Maccoby

Hyam Maccoby was a British scholar and dramatist who specialized in Jewish theology and its interactions with Christianity. Born on March 20, 1924, and passing on May 2, 2004, Maccoby was particularly known for his work on the historical figure of Jesus and the origins of Christianity. He was a prolific writer and a respected figure in religious studies, contributing significantly to the understanding of Jewish-Christian relations throughout history.

Maccoby's research often challenged conventional views, particularly in Christian theology. He argued that Jesus was a Pharisaic Rabbi and that Paul, rather than Jesus, was the true founder of Christianity. His works, such as 'The Mythmaker: Paul and the Invention of Christianity', have been influential in both academic and religious circles, sparking both support and controversy.

Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, Maccoby served as a lecturer at Leo Baeck College in London, where he educated rabbinical students and engaged in interfaith dialogue. His scholarly contributions extend beyond religious disputes; his works also include plays and television scripts, reflecting his versatile engagement with both academic and popular audiences.
