Marc D. Angel
Rabbi Marc D. Angel is an American rabbi and author, known for his work in the field of Sephardic Jewish studies and contemporary Jewish thought. Born on March 31, 1945, in Seattle, Washington, he has been a leading figure in addressing issues relevant to the Sephardic community in the United States and abroad. Rabbi Angel received his B.A. in English Literature from Yeshiva University and was ordained at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. He further pursued graduate studies in English literature at the City University of New York.
Throughout his career, Rabbi Angel has served as the Rabbi Emeritus of the historic Congregation Shearith Israel, the oldest Jewish congregation in the United States, located in New York City. He held the position of Senior Rabbi there for many years, where he was noted for his scholarly approach to Jewish law and his efforts to address contemporary issues within the framework of Halacha (Jewish law).
Rabbi Angel has authored and edited numerous books and articles on Jewish theology, philosophy, and history, particularly focusing on the Sephardic tradition. His works often explore the intersection of traditional Jewish thought and modern challenges, aiming to foster an understanding that is both deeply rooted in Jewish traditions and responsive to contemporary questions. He is also the founder of the Institute for Jewish Ideas and Ideals, which promotes a pluralistic approach to Jewish life and thought.
