Karen Katz

Karen Katz is an American author and illustrator of children's books, best known for her distinctive, vibrant, and brightly colored illustrations. Born in 1947, she has a background in graphic design and attended the Tyler School of Art. Before becoming a full-time author and illustrator, Katz worked in various artistic roles, including costume design and graphic design.

Karen Katz's journey into children's books began after she adopted her daughter from Guatemala, which inspired her to create her first book, 'Over the Moon: An Adoption Tale,' published in 1997. This personal experience deeply influenced her work, leading her to write and illustrate books that celebrate the joys of childhood and family life. Her books often feature simple yet engaging stories that are perfect for young readers, with themes revolving around family, holidays, and everyday adventures.

Throughout her career, Katz has authored and illustrated numerous popular children's books, including the acclaimed 'Where Is Baby's Belly Button?' which has become a staple in early childhood reading. Her distinctive style, characterized by bold outlines and a collage-like use of mixed media, makes her work easily recognizable. Katz's books not only entertain but also provide young children with an interactive reading experience, often incorporating lift-the-flap elements that encourage reader participation.
