Eric A Kimmel

Eric A. Kimmel was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 30, 1946. He attended PS 193, Andries Hudde Junior High School, and Midwood High School. Kimmel went on to earn his bachelor's degree in English literature from Lafayette College in 1967 and his doctorate in Education from the University of Illinois in 1973. He taught elementary school in Manhattan and worked as a librarian in the United States and in Ethiopia. Kimmel completed his doctoral studies in early childhood education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1973.

Kimmel has been a full-time writer since 1978 and has published over 130 books for children. His works include adaptations of folktales and legends that are beloved by children all over the world. Among his most famous books are 'Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins', which received the Caldecott Honor, and 'The Golem’s Latkes'. Kimmel’s books are particularly noted for their humor, vibrant characters, and vivid storytelling.

Throughout his career, Eric Kimmel has received numerous awards including the National Jewish Book Award and the Sydney Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award. His contributions to children's literature have been recognized with awards and accolades, and he continues to inspire young readers with his engaging stories that often draw from Jewish folklore and traditions. Kimmel lives in Portland, Oregon, where he continues to write and participate in literacy and children's literature initiatives.
