Yosef Dov Soloveitchik
Rabbi Yosef Dov (Joseph B.) Soloveitchik was a major American Orthodox rabbi, Talmudist, and modern Jewish philosopher. He was a scion of the Lithuanian Jewish Soloveitchik rabbinic dynasty. As a rosh yeshiva of Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary at Yeshiva University in New York City, Rabbi Soloveitchik was regarded as a leading authority on Halacha (Jewish law), and his teachings and writings influenced the development of Orthodox Judaism. He was born on February 27, 1903, in Pruzhany, then part of the Russian Empire, and he passed away on April 9, 1993, in Boston, Massachusetts. Throughout his life, he strived to harmonize the secular with the sacred, and his philosophical works often dealt with existentialist and phenomenological themes from a Halachic perspective.
