Moses Isserles
Moses Isserles, commonly known as the Rema, was born in 1520 in Kraków, Poland and died there in 1572. He was a prominent Polish rabbi, talmudist, and posek (Jewish legal decisor), who is best known for his fundamental work of Halakha (Jewish law), the HaMapah, a commentary on Joseph Karo's Shulchan Aruch. His work extended the Shulchan Aruch’s applicability to Ashkenazi Jews by incorporating regional customs and interpretations of Jewish law. Isserles was also known for his contributions to Jewish philosophy and mysticism, and he was a pivotal figure in the Jewish community of Kraków.
