Joseph ben Ephraim Karo

Joseph ben Ephraim Karo, also spelled Yosef Caro, was born in 1488 in Toledo, Spain, and died in 1575 in Safed, Ottoman Empire (now Israel). He was a Jewish scholar who is most famously known for his codification of Jewish law, the Shulchan Aruch, which is still widely used as the basis for Jewish legal decision-making. Karo's work was revolutionary in its systematic presentation of Jewish law. Throughout his life, Karo also wrote numerous other works, including commentaries on the Mishnah and the Talmud.
