Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin

Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin, commonly known as the Netziv, was a prominent rabbi and the dean of the Volozhin Yeshiva, the most influential yeshiva of the 19th century in Lithuania. Born in 1816 in Mir, Belarus, he became one of the leading Torah scholars of his time. The Netziv was renowned for his deep and broad knowledge of all areas of Jewish study, including Talmud, Halacha, and Jewish philosophy, as well as his engagement with secular knowledge, which was unusual for a man of his position during that era. He led the Volozhin Yeshiva until its forced closure by the Russian government in 1892. His leadership style was inclusive and aimed at fostering independent thought among his students.
