Rabi Shneur Zalman de Liadi
Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (1745–1812) was an Orthodox rabbi and the founder of Chabad Lubavitch, a branch of Hasidic Judaism. Born in Liozna, Belarus, he was a disciple of Rabbi Dovber of Mezeritch, the Great Maggid, who was himself a disciple of the founder of Hasidism, the Baal Shem Tov. Rabbi Shneur Zalman established a new philosophy that focuses on understanding and internalizing the essence of the divine teachings.
His magnum opus, the Tanya, is considered the foundational work of Chabad philosophy. It outlines his system of Hasidic thought, known as 'Chabad' (an acronym for Chochmah, Binah, Da'at – Wisdom, Understanding, and Knowledge). The Tanya has been studied by followers of Chabad Hasidism continuously since its publication and serves as a spiritual guidebook.
Rabbi Shneur Zalman was also known for his legal writings in the Shulchan Aruch HaRav, which organizes and clarifies the opinions laid out in the Code of Jewish Law. His leadership extended into the realms of communal welfare and education, setting precedents for Jewish leadership in Eastern Europe. His legacy continues to influence not only Chabad followers but Jewish thought and practice worldwide.
