Rebbe Noson of Breslov

Rebbe Noson of Breslov, born Nathan Sternhartz in 1780 in the city of Nemirov, Ukraine, was a prominent disciple of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov. After Rebbe Nachman’s death, Rebbe Noson became the leader of the Breslov Hasidic movement and dedicated his life to preserving and disseminating his teacher’s teachings. He transcribed and published many of Rebbe Nachman’s works, including the seminal 'Likutei Moharan', a collection of kabbalistic and ethical teachings.

Rebbe Noson also authored several original works, most notably 'Likutei Halachos', an eight-volume magnum opus that applies Rebbe Nachman’s teachings to the Shulchan Aruch (Code of Jewish Law). This work reflects his profound insight into the interconnection between Jewish law and spirituality, demonstrating his deep commitment to spiritual growth and religious observance.

Despite facing significant opposition and hardship, including financial difficulties and the skepticism of other Jewish leaders, Rebbe Noson remained steadfast in his mission. His writings and the institutions he established helped to ensure the survival and growth of the Breslov movement well beyond his death in 1844. Today, Rebbe Noson is revered not only within the Breslov community but also among wider circles for his spiritual insights and his role in preserving Hasidic teachings.
