Shimon Bar Yochai
Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, also known by his acronym Rashbi, was a tannaitic sage in ancient Israel, said to have lived during the 2nd century CE. He is most famous for his attributed authorship of the Zohar, the chief work of Kabbalah. Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai was one of the most prominent disciples of Rabbi Akiva, and he was known for his deep spiritual insights and commitment to the Jewish law. After the Bar Kokhba revolt, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai was forced into hiding due to his opposition to Roman rule, during which time he and his son Elazar delved deeply into the mystical aspects of the Torah.
